Project ABC: About Building Connections for Young Children and Families
The SAMHSA funded Project ABC will provide comprehensive, family-centered, culturally competent mental health services to young children, ages birth to five, and their families. These children are either already in the child welfare system or at risk of entry, have a serious emotional or behavioral problem, and live in an underserved geographical area of Los Angeles County that receives over 5600 child abuse and neglect referrals of children ages birth to five annually. Approximately 500 young children and families will be enrolled during the six-year period of performance. In addition to providing core mental health services, the project will identify and coordinate a broad palette of community-based services; develop a social marketing campaign; provide training and workforce development related to delivery of services to birth to five year olds; and participate in local and national evaluation efforts.
Strength-based, individualized service plans will be developed in collaboration with families by the interagency Care Team, including:
-- Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health -- Department of Child and Family Services -- Children’s Institute Inc. -- Childrens Hospital Los Angeles
Interagency collaboration, increased community capacity, policy development, and advocacy for system change are critical components of this interagency project.
