 The Child Health-Works Program

Funded through First 5 LA, this is a $5 million, 5-year initiative serving children with special needs, their families and the providers serving this population in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) preschool centers.

The program is a partnership between LAUSD, Los Angeles Department of Mental Health, and the Family Resource Center Network and together serves the health, mental health, nutrition, dental, and developmental needs of preschool children at 20 sites throughout Los Angeles County. Current program enhancement initiatives include nutrition education, obesity prevention, vision screening (using autorefractometry), development of school gardens and dental screening training for LAUSD Early Education nurses to promote oral health.

In 2005, 280 children in 4 Early Education Centers participated in health screenings offered by Child Health Works. Since the programs inception over 1,000 children have participated in health screenings.
