Building Capacity of Family Resource Centers in CA to More Effectively Educate Parents of Children With Disabilities
Background:
The project is working with select, primarily rural, FRCs to advocate for improved access to services and to build their capacity to more effectively train parent leaders and parents of children with developmental disabilities through the development of a videoteleconference (telehealth) network. The target population that will benefit from the training will be parents of children served by the FRCs in communities throughout CA.
Project Goals & Objectives:
The goal of the project is to increase access to health information, provide networking/technical assistance, staff development and training opportunities, as well as parent support groups via telehealth, to rural FRCs, through the establishment of a FRC statewide network utilizing telehealth (videoteleconference) technology.
Project Objectives Include:
1. Define current technology resources and parent experience with telehealth technology in the 47 CA FRCs.
2. With at least 10 primarily rural FRCs develop a telehealth Network and define training objectives for the project year.
3. Work with the Northern Sierra Rural Health Network [NSRHN (as a consultant for technology)] and at least 10 FRCs to develop a collaborative agreement with local Regional Centers, community hospital/clinics or other community-based organizations to access and utilize the telehealth technology.
4. Conduct at least 8 telehealth events, held monthly, providing technical assistance, leadership training or information sharing about accessing resources with at least 10 FRCs, with bridging provided by the NSRHN.
5. Identify telemedicine specialty services available to children with special needs/disabilities, and develop a FRC directory or post to the FRCNCA Web site.
6. Establish a plan for continuation of the telehealth FRC Network including helping the FRCs to write grant proposals for continuation funding.
