Ms. Smith leads the policy concentration in the LEND program, focusing on child health related issues. She directes local and state-wide projects to improve conditions for children with special health care needs and their families. Ms. Smith also conducts research in the areas of spina bifida and trasition.  Additionally, she co-teaches a graduate course in the School of Public Health at UCLA, Children with Special Health Care Needs: A Systems Perspective.
